In this role, your work will involve Order Entry and Contact Center Reprsentative responsibilities. Qualified candidates will have strong customer service skills and experience working as a Pharmacy technician.

This position is overnight, Sunday through Thursday.

Responsibilities:

Answer all phone calls ensuring that security and confidentiality are maintained for all customers

The Certified Pharmacy Technician position is responsible for assisting in the preparation of medications to be dispensed to patients unit. This includes the preparation of oral, topical, and intravenous medications, and the processing of outpatient prescriptions (this includes chemotherapy). All medications that are prepared must be checked by a registered pharmacist.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Performs various functions associated with AIDHC drug distribution system. This includes, but is not limited to, the preparation of medications for patients, the completion of necessary dispensing records, and the delivery and exchange of medications.
2.Performs aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms. This includes the practice of aseptic technique, proper procedure for preparing all types of parenteral admixtures (including chemotherapy or other specialty solutions).
3. Demonstrates a through knowledge, and maintaining competency of understanding the duties and responsibilities of the position to which he/she is assigned which may include:
Unit dose cart fill
Pyxis refill batch
Kits and Carts
IV admixture ( TPN, Chemotherapy, CRRT, Antibiotic and hydration therapies)
Departmental orders
Allergy Clinic
Oral Specials batch
Unit dose packaging
Filling Outpatient Prescriptions
Unit dose bar coding
Pharmacy Inspections
Delivery of Narcotics
Floor Stock / Departmental Billing
4. Carries out the calculations required for the usual dosage determination and solutions preparation, using weight and volume equivalents in the metric system. (All work must be reviewed and checked by a registered pharmacist)
5. Pharmacy Downtime procedures for Epic and Pyxis.
6. Must have the ability to work well with others.
7. Regular attendance is required.
8. Good communications skills are required.

Performance Skills:

1. Uses appropriate pharmaceutical medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols common to the prescribing, dispensing, and charting of medications in the hospital.
2. Operates automatic technology, (computers, repacking equipment, etc.) in accordance to policy, procedures, and manufacturing instructions.
3. Pharmaceutical Calculations
4. Medication names (Brand and Generic)
5. Preparation procedures for adult, pediatric, and neonatal non-sterile and sterile dosage forms.
6. Medication error prevention methods

Education and Training:

Certified Pharmacy Technician required.
Hospital Pharmacy experience preferred

The Pharmacy Clinical Specialist in Internal Medicine is responsible for the provision of direct patient care, training and education of other health care providers, contributing to formulary management activities, and participating in quality improvement projects. Direct patient care activities include improving patient outcomes by optimizing pharmacotherapy, ensuring medication safety, and promoting effective transitions of care. The Pharmacy Clinical Specialist will be expected to take an active role in projects and activities beyond direct patient care that support the mission, values, and goals of the Department of Pharmacy and Boston Medical Center. This pharmacist will be expected to provide exemplary service to other internal customers at BMC, as well as embody BMCS RESPECT standards in all interactions with patients and colleagues. This position has rotating shifts and includes weekends and holidays.

Distributive and operational responsibilities
* Ensures all medications are handled in the manner established by the Formulary Management Committee, applicable accreditation standards, state and federal regulations, and the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
* Reviews and verifies medication orders, reviews patient charts, evaluates applicable laboratory data to identify or prevent drug-related problems or toxicity. For each medication, the pharmacist evaluates the order for appropriateness including but not limited to dose, route and frequency for clinical indication and organ function, screening for drug interactions, therapeutic duplication, allergy history, and recommending use of formulary drugs or alternative cost-effective therapy when possible.
* Works closely with the central pharmacist and technicians to ensure accurate and timely acquisition, distribution and control of all medications, including investigational drugs. Collaborates with the Pharmacy Purchasing team on special medication needs.
* Adheres to all protocols and policies related to controlled substances.
* Supervises the activities of supportive personnel including student interns and technicians.
* Uses designated pharmacy automation and/or barcoding systems to document checking of any medication or sterile product prior to dispensing.
* Direct patient care
* Rotates through different clinical shifts with a specific core practice area
* Makes recommendations to optimize pharmacotherapy within the context of a multidisciplinary team
* Provides effective transition of care needs including, but not limited to, medication reconciliation, discharge counseling, facilitating medication to bedside, and completing post-discharge telephone calls.
* Prevents patient harm by promoting the safe use of medications
* Identifies and reports medication-related events
* Performs daily targeted interventions to decrease risk of readmission, optimize therapy, and improve medication safety
* Serves as a pharmacy liaison to the BMC staff by ensuring the connectivity between clinical and distributive services.
* Documents all patient care activities

* Serves as a preceptor for residents and students
* Assists in the orientation and training of new pharmacists, residents, interns and technicians as assigned.
* Provides timely and accurate drug information, training, and education to patients and health care providers

EDUCATION:

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Work requires a valid license to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. MA pharmacist licensure must be complete and verified by the date of hire.
Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification is preferred

This full-time Hospital Pharmacy Technician position will support extended hours for the Operating Room Satellite Pharmacy. Shifts are typically 8.5 hours long, starting between 5:30 – 11:00 a.m. There may be occasional rotation through evening shifts in Central Pharmacy, starting at 3:00 p.m.

Weekend schedule

Current weekend shift rotation is Saturday and Sunday in the Central Pharmacy every other weekend.
